This is my beautiful daughter. She is heading to open heart surgery next week and I desperately wanted to make sure that I shot her first birthday session before her surgery. I want to capture her before and after and see the difference it makes in her.

My Girl's Christmas Portraits
With how crazy my world has been the last several months, I just now took their Christmas portraits. I still haven't taken my daughter's first birthday pictures. Next week....I promise. But here are their photos! I highjacked one of my friend's houses because we didn't put up a tree this year. WAY too much to even think about.
Just for Fun
I have been making it a point to photograph all the little things. During the big events, I am too busy juggling a squirmy baby, camera, camera bag, diaper bag, purse, winter coats....blah blah blah, that I don't actually get "good" shots. I get the point-and-click-at-least-I-got-it shot. Not the ones that you want to really revisit. On my personal blog, I talked about focusing on the important things. And what is more important the our Heavenly Father and our families...I can't think of anything. And I posted tips on this one for getting better photos of your kids. So I thought that maybe it was time to live by those rules. My kids were playing the other day and I wanted to play with the ISO on my new camera. I've had the camera for about six months, but haven't had time to really play with it. That's just what I did. I pumped the ISO up to 2000 and shot at 1.8 because I LOVE shallow depth of field more than anything! And here are a few of the shots that I got.
My oldest daughter loves to play dress up. Most times she's a hero in a pink breast cancer awareness cape, but other times she wants to be a princess. This day, she wanted to a princess. This crown is falling apart and needs to be tossed, but she still sports it like a true princess.
I am super excited about getting good photos tomorrow during Christmas! Paper and ribbons flying!

My youngest daughter got pelted in the face with one of those weeble wobble heavy little toys, curtsey of her sister. So she still has a little dried blood in her nose. I didn't realize that babies could bleed or cry that hard and then be fine 20 minutes later. Blew my mind.
She used to have the same eye color as her younger sister. But over the last year they have started to turn more green. I have blue eyes and my hubby has the most piercing green eyes that I have ever seen. Everyone we know say that she is a perfect mix of the two of us and now her eyes are too, I guess.

Client Organization
I love using things that reflect my own marketing and branding. There is just something about it that makes me feel more professional and unifies my whole business. I designed a binder for 2011 that I put everything in. I filed my client's welcome packets, orders, invoices and tax receipts in it. I kept extra pens and business cards in there as well. When I would be waiting for clients are locations, I usually always end up with people asking me if I was a photographer just because I was holding a binder with my work on it.
Last year, I didn't realize that Zazzle had psd guides that you can download until after I ordered my binder. I still got lots of compliments on it regardless if the design didn't match up. I used it for the entire year without the corners ripping or getting all "used" looking. Zazzle creates some quality products, that's for sure. I am very excited about my 2012 binder. I just designed it in photoshop and ordered it this morning as I was running out the door for church. Check it out!

Tips for Photographing Your Children
I have been totally convicted tonight. My oldest daughter is five years old and I love her with all my heart. She recently started school after two years of homeschooling. The transition has been insanely difficult. As I scroll through my monthly photos I've taken of my family, I see less and less of her. And it literally crushes me. It seems the only time I get to be with her is the hustle and bustle of after school activities and the bed time fight. And who wants pictures of that? I saw a facebook post of one of my favorite photographers, Paint the Moon, and I was totally convicted about my lack of photos of my oldest daughter. So, it occurred to me to take her out and make a memory. The one the photographer posted was random acts of kindness. Her daughter wanted to give away free balloons to folks in the mall. I thought it was a great idea and I am so going to do that with my daughter. Sometimes with having my children almost five years apart (not by choice), things get hurried and rushed because I am trying to play catch up all the time. My children are fabulous kids and really fun. We do so many activities with them, but I don't get to take good pictures most of the time. So I think I am going to post some tips that I have noticed about taking good photos of your children.
1. Put the baby down and let them cry for a few minutes so that you can enjoy one on one time with your other kiddos.
2. Position them during play time close to windows and natural light. That way when they are moving fast, you still don't have to set your flash and distract them.
3. Find something they like to do and photograph every detail of it. For example: if they like baseball, get out of the stands on shoot before the game. Photograph details of the game like close ups of the teams gloves in the dugout, the painted lines on the dirt, their cleats or anything that catches your attention. Maybe make a photo collage with frames on their wall and have them proudly show it off to their friends, and know that you made them feel so special.
4. During Christmas set your ISO a little higher and get some fabulous shots of them in the dark with the Christmas tree lights. Maybe try a tripod with this shot or steady yourself against a wall.
5. With my oldest daughter, she's helped me with new locations since she was born. She is so used to having the camera in her face that there is no, "Don't look at me" face. As soon as she sees that camera she's got her painted smiles and little sas going. Sometimes it drives me bananas. So lessons for this one: try to catch them when they don't see you. Put a telephoto lens on and shoot when you have some music going and they don't hear the click of your camera.
6. When I see another photographer's shots, I constantly compare their gorgeous work to mine. And when this is good when you are trying to improve yourself, it's counterproductive when you analyze their work and tell yourself "I wish our mall wasn't so lame and looked as whimsical as their mall." or "Wow look at that beach, wish we lived someplace like that." Use what ya got people! God has you where you are for a reason, so use the resources He's put in front of you. One day, I pray to live in a quite cottage beach town, but for now, I have Cheyenne. Its a country, cowboy infested, gun toting wonderland. There is so much charm here that it's ridiculous! The cowboys are AMAZING! I've never seen such hardworking people in my life. During Frontier Days this year, I vow to get away from my family for a few minutes during the pancake breakfasts and showcase just what these cowboys can do... Show me somewhere else in the planet with what I have here.
7. Photograph all their moods. My daughters are tornadoes when it comes to their moods. The little one has all eighty of her moods the first three minutes she's awake. Makes life interesting that's for sure! Then she's a happy little thing the rest of the day. My other one has really whinny moments, giggly moments, angry moments, and the one I usually get is hungry moments. It makes me laugh!
8. Photograph them while their sleeping. Its such a sweet time when their folded in funny angles and drooling. Some day you'll look back at those photos and wonder when they turned into teenagers. Must have been while you were sleeping.
9. Photograph them with art projects. Its so fun watching them be so proud of what they've created! Watching their eyes light up because you're making a big deal about what they've done all by themselves is really quite amazing!
10. And my number one tip is this: during their birthday parties, hire a photographer for goodness sakes! I've done this for the last two parties that I've done for my daughters and its been the best thing I've ever done. When you are able to focus on the party and the memories from that event instead of toting your camera around and trying to capture every single detail. You miss so much of what's going on because you're too busy trying to shoot everything.

Valentine Boudoir Sessions
I will be having a boudoir session marathon for Cheyenne on January 14th and 15th, just in time for Valentine's Day! Denver: yours will be a little later in the month. Probably the very next weekend. These sessions are $150 and include a 20-page 5x5 little black book album and the prints to fill that album. Each session will be about an hour long. I will have a makeup artist available at your own expense. A deposit of $75 is required to hold your appointment. Please email me at lacey@laceydippoldphotography.com to reserve your spot and get more information.
Here's a few examples of boudoir I've done in the past.

Changes
I have recently been going through a ton of changes. I remade my entire business marketing and branding to look still fun and whimsical but a tad more sophisticated. I think I am in love with the simplicity of the whole thing. I am completely in love with my new logo... :)
My facebook fan page has also changed. Check out the new fan page here. You can still find your sneak peeks on the fan page, but I am now offering them on my blog. I used to publish them on my old blog, but that old thing became like a forgotten little black dress in the back of your closet that is now three sizes too small... After much neglect and many changes to my boutique, its safe to say that creating a new one would be much easier. I am also separating my family life from my work life. For me this was a very hard decision to make. Photography is so much a part of who I am and what I do that it felt like I was amputating my right arm. But I have followers on the old blog that only followed for the nifty projects and crafts that I posted. Having their readers clogged with photography posts, just seemed a bit rude. So, alas, I opted to separate them. My personal blog can be found here, Sprouting a Little Nostalgia.
I also am raising my prices slightly, effective January 1, 2012. To sign up for the VIP membership, which keeps your prices the same for the next 5 years, please email me at lacey@laceydippoldphotography.com for a sign up form.
I will be announcing all the new events here. I have a ton that are being announced over the next few days. Some were already announced on Facebook, so please check there for the most current events for the time being!
